“This piece is him. Every part of him. The parts I thought would annoy me for the rest of my life. And the parts I really believed I would love for the rest of my life. Life had other plans.
It is his certainty. I’ve never seen such certainty in another person, such knowing, such assurance, such confidence. His dark parts snuffed that out. It is his mixed emotions. His anxiety. His fear. It weakened him. It broke others around him. It broke us. It is our brokenness. It is my brokenness. It is all I have.
Every bit left in me to survive this, to paint him out – exuded into this piece of canvas. It is not for the sake of beauty, nor balance, nor order. It is not for the sake of audience, nor praise, nor presentation. It is for the sake of healing.”
Rawan Ita-Diaz is a Detroit based artist with a Master’s Degree in Architecture & Design. In 2017, she was struck by an SUV while walking across a parking lot. Her life was never the same. Rawan’s permanent injuries cause her to struggle with chronic pain and emotional distress.
To create, Rawan persists through the pain and finds emotional healing while painting. She paints the good, the bad, and the truths of life through what she calls Project TheraPaint. Rawan’s artwork is showcased in exhibitions and print publications throughout the world.
