‘Drops of Madness XV’ captures a surreal and unsettling moment frozen in time—a full-body figurative portrait of numerous childish figures, seated and posed like in an old class photograph. Yet, this seemingly innocent scene is disrupted by a deliberate and provocative obscuring of the figures’ identities. Black inserts, some painted and others as tangible patches affixed to the artwork, conceal the eyes of each character, evoking a sense of mystery and anonymity. This choice transforms the group into a spectral assembly, their hidden identities suggesting secrecy, guilt, or perhaps protection from judgment.
The figures’ twisted expressions—unsettling smiles, enigmatic gazes, and body language pointing toward the viewer—invite us to confront their untold stories. The obscured eyes create a barrier that challenges viewers to speculate on the nature of these characters and their shared narrative as if they are both victims and perpetrators of unseen actions.
Inspired by themes of memory, identity, and collective madness, ‘Drops of Madness XV’ draws on personal emotions, archetypal storytelling, and the aesthetics of old photographs to evoke a sense of nostalgia tainted with discomfort. It also critiques the ways society labels and erases individual identities, as the black inserts resemble the criminalization of marginalized or misunderstood figures.
