‘Chrysalis IV’ is an enigmatic half-body figurative portrait rendered in graphite and mixed techniques on paper. The female-looking figure depicted is partially obscured by a sheer, transparent veil, and her eyes are gently closed in a state of transcendence or transformation. Delicately sitting on the veil are numerous butterflies, their elegant forms almost entirely concealing her face. Among them, three butterflies are highlighted with shimmering glitter in silver and purple, drawing attention to their symbolic significance.
The butterflies represent metamorphosis, the transformative journey from one state of being to another. They symbolize the opportunity to channel creative energy into growth, fluidity, and self-awareness. This transformation aligns with the fluidity of identity, inviting the viewer to question the rigidity of labels and embrace the divine, authentic core of the self.
The title “Chrysalis” refers to a transitional phase—a moment of stillness and concealment preceding emergence and evolution. Inspired by a mosaic of personal emotions, archetypal influences, and transgenerational psychology, this piece explores the boundaries between the visible and invisible, stagnation and rebirth.
Through its intricate details, “Chrysalis IV” invites the viewer to delve into the mysteries of transformation, and embrace the fluid possibilities of selfhood and soul.
