‘Butterflies’ is an enigmatic full-body portrait rendered in graphite and mixed techniques on paper, featuring five youthful figures in a composition that invites inquiry. Each figure, clad in long, somber black dresses reminiscent of school uniforms, carries an air of mystery. Some gaze directly at the viewer, while others seem to look elsewhere, lost in the artwork cut. Glittering silver details, including a cross-shaped jewel worn by one figure, punctuate the otherwise subdued tones of the piece, offering moments of light within the darker aesthetic.
The artwork’s cropped borders add a unique layer of tension, creating an incomplete narrative that challenges the viewer to imagine the unseen. Faces and features are partially obscured or absent, resembling a mistaken photograph, yet this deliberate redaction serves a deeper purpose. It suggests that identity is not fixed but fluid, shaped as much by the viewer’s imagination as by the artist’s vision. Drawing from Pirandello’s philosophy, the characters in “Butterflies” embody the idea of being “One, No One, and One Hundred Thousand,” leaving their identities open to interpretation, resonating with universal themes of individuality and anonymity.
The butterfly, a recurring symbol in my work, plays a pivotal role here as a metaphor for transformation and fluidity. It represents the potential for the soul to transcend, to evolve into its truest, most divine form. In the piece, the butterfly’s presence, only in the title of the artwork, suggests that this transformation remains an unseen possibility—a thread of the invisible world that could alter the course of events from an alchemical perspective
