‘Masterpeace’ (May 2024)

The theme for this year’s show was “Drawing Strength, Love, and Life,” inviting students to express what peace means to them through their artwork.

Students submitted their artwork by April 26th, 2024. All materials were accepted, with the only limitation being that the artwork could not exceed 20″x20″ inches in size. Three finalists from each of the following age groups were selected:
1. K-2nd Grade
2. 3rd-5th Grade
3. 6th-8th Grade
4. 9th-12th Grade

Our panel of judges, Councilmember Faessel, Carol Latham of Muzeo, and Tram Le from the City of Santa Ana,
evaluated the submissions based on four key criteria:

  1. Interpretation of Theme (40 points): Did the artwork creatively convey the theme “MasterPeace: Drawing Strength, Love, and Life”?
  2. Creativity / Originality (30 points): Did the artwork display fresh, original ideas and creative thought?
  3. Composition (20 points): Was there a clear focal point, and was there a good balance of positive and negative space?

Technique (10 points): Did the artwork show a solid understanding of the medium used? After a long day of scoring artwork, our Judges accomplished their mission!

Each artwork was scored out of 100 points, and the highest-scoring pieces were celebrated at the event.

The Importance of Art for Our Youth
Every child is an artist; the problem is staying an artist when you grow up”Pablo Picasso

Events like the MasterPeace Art Show highlight the importance of artistic expression. By showcasing students’ work, we validate their experiences and emotions, creating a sense of belonging and self-worth. Moreover, sharing their art with the community brings us closer together, as we witness and appreciate the diverse perspectives and stories of our youth. Art becomes a voice for those who otherwise have difficulty expressing their emotions, creating art can be an emotional release for many and provides a safe space for creative expression.

Art plays a crucial role in the development and well-being of our youth. It serves as a powerful medium for self-expression, allowing young minds to convey their thoughts, emotions, and perspectives in a creative and impactful way. Engaging in artistic activities helps build character and confidence and fosters critical thinking. When students see their ideas come to life through their artwork, they gain a sense of accomplishment and pride. This boost in confidence can positively affect other areas of their lives, encouraging them to take on new challenges and believe in their capabilities. Art creates an appreciation for diversity and inclusion and by exploring different perspectives, and styles through art, children learn to respect and celebrate differences which can bring communities closer together.

Creating a Community Through Art

Through events like the MasterPeace Art Show, we provide a platform for young artists to explore their creativity and communicate their vision of peace. This opportunity not only highlights their talents, but also brings communities together, nurturing a sense of unity and shared purpose.

This art show was more than just an exhibition; it was a celebration of community, self-expression, and the power of art to connect us all. By participating in this event, students and families explored their creative potential and shared their vision of peace.

We appreciated seeing everyone there, supporting our young artists, and enjoying an evening of creativity and inspiration. It was wonderful to come together to master peace through art!
