‘Beyond Aesthetics: An Art Social with Purpose’ (October 2025)

Beyond Aesthetics: An Art Social with Purpose

On Saturday, October 4th, SOCIAL Costa Mesa welcomed The Art Spread’s Beyond Aesthetics: An Art Social with Purpose, a pop-up art experience that went far beyond the typical gallery visit. This four-hour event brought together art lovers, local artists, and community members for an afternoon centered on the transformative power of creativity.

Why Art Stories Matter

In a world that often moves too fast, art has the ability to make us pause, reflect, and truly feel. When artists share their stories of struggle and triumph through their work, they create bridges of understanding and empathy that transcend words.

These visual narratives do something remarkable: they remind us that we’re not alone in our challenges. They show us that pain can be transformed into beauty, that darkness can give way to light, and that creativity can be both a lifeline during dark times and a celebration of life and survival. When someone stands before a painting that depicts an artist’s journey through depression, loss, or trauma, and they see their own experience reflected back at them and feel a sense of connection and understanding.

Art that tells a story doesn’t just decorate a space; it validates experiences, sparks conversations that might never happen otherwise, and gives permission for others to share their own personal truths. It breaks down the walls we build around our hardest moments and invites us into a shared experience of what it is to be human—messy, complicated, and beautiful all at once.

This is why events like Beyond Aesthetics are essential. They create spaces where vulnerability is celebrated, where creativity is accessible to everyone, and where art serves its highest purpose: connecting us to each other’s humanity.

Let’s Talk Shop!

Across three sessions (12:45pm, 1:45pm, and 2:45pm), participants created their own delicious-looking artwork. Participants learned about color mixing, brush control, and composition while painting and fostering a sense of community.

With only 10 spots per session, the workshops felt intimate and personal. Castro could give individual attention to each participant, offering tips and encouragement tailored to their specific needs. The small group size also fostered connections among participants, who bonded over shared nervous laughter, “oops” moments, and the thrill of watching their creations come to life.

Led by artist Claudine Castro—a UC Irvine Studio Arts graduate who rediscovered her creative calling after years in the wellness industry—the “Cozy Baked Goods” gouache painting workshops embodied the event’s theme of art as transformation. Castro’s own journey from abandoning art due to societal pressures to embracing intuitive, joy-filled creativity made her the ideal guide for nervous beginners taking their first steps into artistic expression. Castro’s is a powerful example of the event’s theme—overcoming adversity and finding your way back to what matters most to you. The center of what The Art Spread represents. That’s the magic of accessible art education: it demystifies the creative process and reminds people that art isn’t reserved for the “talented few.” It belongs to anyone who wants to participate and is willing to pick up a brush and try.

Beyond Aesthetics wasn’t just about creating and viewing art—it was expertly structured to maintain excitement and engagement throughout the entire four-hour event. The organizers understood that energy and anticipation keep people present, connected, and invested in the experience.

Raffle excitement built throughout the day like a drumroll that wouldn’t quit. With three separate rounds of winners announced at 1:30pm, 2:30pm, and 3:30pm, attendees had multiple chances to win original artwork.

The silent art auction added another layer of engagement, with attendees circling back throughout the afternoon to check bids and strategize their final offers. The auction concluded at 3:35pm with the announcement of final winners. At 3:45pm, a final collection period allowed raffle and auction winners to gather their treasures, creating a flood of excitement as people carefully packaged their new artwork with the event wrapping up at 4PM.

Community-Powered Impact: More Than Sponsors, True Partners
Beyond Aesthetics wouldn’t have been possible without the vision and generosity of community partners who understand that investing in the arts means investing in the soul of a community. The event was sponsored in part by organizations that champion creative expression and access:

The City of Costa Mesa continues to position Costa Mesa as a cultural destination where creativity thrives
California Arts Council ensures that arts funding reaches grassroots organizations making real impact
Thrivent demonstrates corporate responsibility by supporting events that strengthen community bonds
Child Creativity Lab provides ongoing support through donating materials that make art education accessible to all
Pinot’s Palette donated a generous amount of original artwork to support The Art Spread’s art sales and fundraising initiatives.

These partnerships matter because they represent a collective belief that art isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. They understand that communities with strong arts programs have stronger schools and community, more engaged citizens, and better mental health outcomes.

All donations and art purchases at the event were tax-deductible, a detail that might seem small but is actually significant. It ensures that every dollar raised goes directly toward supporting local artists who are often underfunded and undervalued, and toward art programs that provide creative outlets for people who need them most.

Attendees left with more than just artwork in hand—they left with renewed sense of appreciation for art’s transformative power, with new connections forged, and with the satisfaction of knowing they’d contributed to something bigger and beyond themselves.

The true measure of Beyond Aesthetics isn’t just what happened during those four hours—it’s what continues to happen because of them. The artist who sold their first piece and gained confidence to keep creating. The workshop participant who discovered a new hobby and signed up for more classes. The raffle winner who looks at their artwork daily and remembers they’re part of a community that values creativity. The young person who saw artwork depicting mental health struggles and felt less alone.

Events like this create ripple effects that extend far beyond their runtime. They inject vitality into local arts scenes, they validate artists, they introduce people to creative practices that might become lifelong passions, and they strengthen the social fabric of communities by creating shared experiences and common ground.
