All About Crystal

Meet Artist Crystal

Crystal McDonald is a Southern California-based abstract artist known for her vibrant use of color, rich textures, and playful, expressive style. Her work combines spontaneity with intention, often featuring layered compositions and mixed media that celebrate joy, emotion, and the beauty of imperfection.

Crystal began painting in 2017 when her youngest of four children was in college, marking the beginning of a new chapter in her life. With more time and space to explore her own passions, she turned to art as a hobby and a way to reconnect with creativity. Over time, that hobby grew into a passionate pursuit. Crystal now enjoys exploring a meaningful new chapter through her art—proving that it’s never too late to start something new and fulfilling later in life. She hopes to inspire others to see that life can open up in beautiful and unexpected ways when we embrace change and lean into our dreams.

Her inspiration comes from travel, nature, photography, and a strong commitment to well-being. These elements bring balance and clarity to her process: travel expands her perspective, nature provides grounding, and photography helps her notice fleeting moments of beauty. This mindful approach fuels the uplifting energy that radiates from her work.

Crystal holds a degree in Business Administration with a concentration in business computer programming (Management Information Systems) from California State University, Fullerton. Her education helps her bring a thoughtful and organized approach to her art, while still allowing plenty of room for play and self-expression.
Through her art, Crystal aims to connect, uplift, and share messages of love, hope, and resilience. She dreams of sharing her work with collectors around the world and encouraging others to embrace new beginnings—no matter where they are in life’s journey.

A statement from Crystal…

As an abstract artist, I embrace vibrant colors, bold textures, and playful techniques to express emotion, energy, and joy. My work reflects my passion for creating art that evokes positivity and a sense of freedom. Through acrylics and mixed media, I explore themes of love, courage, and gratitude, bringing each piece to life with unique forms and unexpected compositions.

I’m inspired by the world around me—travel, nature, and my commitment to well-being all shape my creative vision. Experimenting with materials and embracing the element of surprise allows each painting to evolve organically. For me, creating art is an exploration of emotion and discovery, where every brushstroke is a way of sharing my personal journey with the viewer.

My goal is to create art that brightens spaces and uplifts the spirit, bringing joy and connection to those who experience it. Whether through original paintings, prints, or unique merchandise, I hope my work inspires creativity and happiness.

Thank you for being part of this creative journey!

Artist Interview – Crystal

In this exclusive interview, Crystal shares how she rediscovers purpose through life’s changing seasons and the deep inspiration behind her vibrant, joy-filled art.

“How do you align with The Art Spread’s mission of transforming lives through art?”

I would like to transform lives by showing that it’s never too late to start something new. I began painting later in life with no previous experience, taking a few classes but mostly teaching myself. Over time, I’ve seen so much growth in my work, and I want to inspire others with the message that improvement and change are always possible, no matter when or where you start. My journey is proof that with dedication and passion, you can create something meaningful, no matter your starting point.

“What message do you convey in your work?”

My art shares a message of joy, freedom, and self-expression. With bright colors, textures, and playful
shapes, I show the beauty of creativity and endless possibilities. I want my paintings to make people feel
happy, inspired, and excited, reminding them that life is full of color and fun surprises.

“What emotions are expressed in your work?”

My art expresses joy, freedom, and positivity through playful energy and vibrant colors, inviting people to
feel happy and uplifted.

“Who is your favorite iconic artist?”

I have many but if I had to pick one, it would be Wassily Kandinsky.

“Is there a word, thought, or feeling that helps you begin your process?”

I have trained my mind to seek ideas everywhere I go, and they just come to me. I tap into the spirit energy
of Native Americans who existed long before I was here in the world. I also use other artists work, things I
read and see on T.V., but mostly I recieve ideas from things I see, and what images arise in my imaginative
eyes and mind.

“Is making art accessible important to you as an artist?”

Yes, it is very important to me. I believe that art should be enjoyed by everyone, not just collectors or
galleries.

“In your studio, do you listen to music or a podcast while you create? Or do you prefer
silence?”

I usually listen to music and podcasts but sometimes enjoy the silence as well.
